in Book Club

Picking pumpkins, eating pumpkin seeds, and finding our way through hay mazes were some of the fun we had in our The Runaway Pumpkin Nature Book Club this month.

The Runaway Pumpkin Nature Book Club Discussion

This month our book club was on the book, The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis. This hilarious story is about a giant pumpkin that gets loose and takes out most of a farm. The alliteration and onomatopoeia make this book so much fun to read.

The Runaway Pumpkin Nature Book Club Field Trip

Since our book was about a runaway pumpkin, it only made sense to go to a Pumpkin Patch! Our nature study group met at the local pumpkin patch on a blistering hot fall day, but it was absolutely beautiful.

We took a hayride to the pumpkin fields where we took our time picking out the best "runaway  pumpkin."

The owner of the pumpkin patch took time to teach us how pumpkins are grown. In our area, pumpkin seeds are planted around the 4th of July and are ripe in late September to October.

We received seeds to take home to grow our own pumpkins or to toast and eat. Yum! And, we debated whether a pumpkin was a fruit or a vegetable. In case you were wondering, pumpkins are fruit.

And because no pumpkin patch trip is complete without a hay maze, corn maze, a human hamster wheel, and an obstacle course, we stopped to have a little fun as well.

Our little nature club is growing, and we are excited to have a little fun while exploring the world around us.

The Runaway Pumpkin Online Nature Book Club

Go on a nature trek with us based on the book, The Runaway Pumpkin. During this online book club, we will go on rabbit trails of discovery about pumpkins, farm animals, and farming. We will find ways to learn by experiencing parts of the book through arts and crafts.

We will add a little nature study magic dust and go on outdoor adventures into nature.

At the conclusion of the story, we will have a "party school" celebrating pumpkins big and small.

Dachelle

Hi, I’m Dachelle. I’m a homeschooling mom of 3 in the South. I love chocolate and have been known to hide it from my children. I can often be found reading a good book (or even sometimes just an okay book) and enjoying a jar of Nutella — don’t judge. I blog, here, at HideTheChocolate.com when I’m not creating book clubs and making lists…lots and lots of lists (it’s an addiction). Learn more…
