This last year, my kids and I went on a world adventure. We toured Pakistan, Africa, Russia, China, and many parts of Europe. We stepped into the lives of people of other cultures, nationalities, and even time periods. And, we did it all through reading books. So, when I was introduced to Multicultural Children’s Book Day, I was excited to participate!
Finish The Story!
As a participant in the Multicultural Children’s Book Day, I was given the chance to take a peek at a brand-new book!
Finish the Story! Harriet Tubman’s Secret Raid is the story of Harriet Tubman, BUT it has a twist! This book is interactive.
Do you remember those “Choose Your Adventure” books as a kid? I even remember a “Choose Your Adventure” movie in junior high. These were all the rage in middle school because your story could be different than your friend’s story, but you were still reading the same book.
Finish the Story! Harriet Tubman’s Secret Raid is similar to these books. In certain parts of the book, you are given choices and proceed to the next part of the story based on your choice. I’ll be honest, I couldn’t wrap my head around this before I received the book.
How can you possibly “Choose Your Adventure” with a non-fiction, historical person?
Well, I won’t spoil the fun for you, but the author, Jeffrey Bensam, does a fabulous job of integrating today’s children with the past. This book not only teaches about an important figure in the freedom of African American slaves but also integrates many other educational disciplines. It would be a great mini-unit study.
This book is appropriate for elementary and middle school students.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022 (1/28/22) is in its 9th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission & History HERE.

Hi, I’m Dachelle. I’m a homeschooling mom of 3 in the South. I love chocolate and have been known to hide it from my children. I can often be found reading a good book (or even sometimes just an okay book) and enjoying a jar of Nutella — don’t judge. I blog, here, at HideTheChocolate.com when I’m not creating book clubs and making lists…lots and lots of lists (it’s an addiction). Learn more…

Harriet Tubman’s story told in an interactive way sounds like fun! Thanks for sharing with Multicultural Children’s Book Day. Please join us tonight at 9 pm EST for our Twitter Party!
Great review! This sounds like an engaging way to learn about such an influential woman in US history. Thanks so much for joining us for Multicultural Children’s Book Day!
