Hi! Welcome to my little corner of the internet!

How I Became a Homeschooler and Curriculum Creator

I’m a homeschooling mom of 3 in the South. I didn’t start out on my career path thinking I would become a homeschool educator or curriculum creator. In fact, it was probably the furthest thing from my mind. I graduated college with a degree in Professional Accountancy, married my college sweetheart, and immediately set out to conquer the world (or at least my corner of it) one boring accounting office at a time. It didn’t take long before I realized that being good at something doesn’t mean you should spend your life doing it. So, my journey for the ultimate career began.

Once I discovered that accounting wasn’t the field I wanted to spend my life in, I became an educator and have spent the last 20 years in traditional school education, homeschool education, curriculum creation, and as an education specialist. But, mostly, I’m a homeschool mom who knows the struggle of getting kids excited to read a book, especially the classics.

This is why I created Literary Adventures for Kids, a full language arts curriculum for preschool to high school that inspires kids to read through rabbit trails and a little bit of magic dust. I use my experiences as an educator in the traditional system to create courses that encourage critical thinking and are catalysts for big conversations.

And it’s why I write here at Hide The Chocolate, a blog about our adventures in homeschooling and parenting using a relaxed Charlotte Mason philosophy. I believe that parents should have the tools to make their homes and their children’s education enchanting. I believe that education should be inspiring. It should be living, breathing, and tangible. Education should be more than textbooks. It should be the desire to become more.

Why Did I Name My Blog “Hide The Chocolate”?

Well, the obvious reason is that I love chocolate and will hide it from my children. I’m not talking about any chocolate, just the good stuff. You know, the European kinds like Lindt and Ferrero Rocher and Nutella — especially Nutella. I have been known to keep a jar of Nutella on my bedside table…Don’t judge!

Sometimes you need chocolate or tea or whatever your vice is, and you don’t want to share it. So you hide it. Maybe you hide it in the pantry and label it gluten-free breadsticks, or you stash it behind the laundry basket (heck, throw it in the laundry basket. It’s not like anything else makes it in there). Wherever you hide it, know that you are not alone. You and countless other moms out there are hiding your stash of chocolatey goodness from those darlings who drive us to eat it.

Feel free to release yourself from the burden of shame and lock that bedroom door and eat your chocolate with a good book (or even sometimes just an okay book).

Because it’s cheaper than therapy.
