Pumpkin Spice Tea, Edgar Allen Poe, Ghoulish Treats and Creative Costumes all make for a fun and spooky Halloween Poetry Teatime.
Recently we began hosting Poetry Teatime at the local library with our homeschool group. We’ve had so much fun meeting with our friends over tea and snacks and reading some of our favorite poems. This month our theme was Spooky Poems. The kids dressed in costume, sipped tea, and had a blast.
Halloween Poetry Teatime Tea and Snacks
To keep with the fall theme, we added some fun fall tea flavors. Pumpkin Spice was hands-down the favorite, though I preferred the Hot Cinnamon Spice. And, as always, we had lemonade for the “non-tea” drinkers.
A couple of the mom’s volunteered to bring snacks. I simply loved the Rice Krispies monsters and monster cupcakes. The kids must have enjoyed the chocolate covered apple slices because they disappeared quickly.
Halloween Poetry Teatime Decorations
We achieved the Haunted Library theme with floating spiders, pumpkins, spell books and even some teapots in costume.
Halloween Poetry Teatime in Costume
Kids like nothing better than to dress up. Poetry Teatime is always a hit with snacks, tea, and poetry, but add a costume and the excitement was palpable.
Halloween Poetry Teatime Resources
My all-time favorite “Spooky Poet” is Edgar Allen Poe. To start off Poetry Teatime, I read from Poe’s Spirits of the Dead. We discussed how to use inflection and emotion when reading and how poetry was art with words – that we as readers must move our listeners to emotion, even if it is not the emotion we were expecting.
If you have teens in the house, a full month study of Edgar Allen Poe’s poetry is perfect for October. The Poetry and a Movie ~ Poe Mini-course is a great way to get the older kids excited about studying poetry.
My girls found some great fun and spooky poems in our collection of Shel Silverstein books, while others brought in Robert Frost, Roald Dahl, and some original works.

Are you having a Halloween Poetry Teatime? What themed teatimes have you had at your house?
Hi, I’m Dachelle. I’m a homeschooling mom of 3 in the South. I love chocolate and have been known to hide it from my children. I can often be found reading a good book (or even sometimes just an okay book) and enjoying a jar of Nutella — don’t judge. I blog, here, at HideTheChocolate.com when I’m not creating book clubs and making lists…lots and lots of lists (it’s an addiction). Learn more…
Oh my! Dachelle, this looks soooo cool! You guys come up with some really fantastic ideas for your group poetry tea times!
Thanks, Lynna!
I just adore this! The costumes, the rice crispy treats, and those tea pots! Did I really see a R2-D2 tea pot? ?
Haha! Yes, the kids love that pot! Thanks!
