Grammar Galaxy Nebula has arrived!

This week I opened my mailbox and found an exciting package from the amazing Dr. Melanie Wilson. If you aren’t familiar with her, she is a Christian psychologist turned homeschooling mother of six and, most recently, author of a new grammar series, Grammar Galaxy. The Grammar Galaxy Nebula Mission Manual and Workbook arrived in the mail just as I was becoming frustrated with teaching grammar and my daughter was starting to revolt.

Our new Grammar Galaxy Nebula arrived in time to save us from the dregs of grammar!

Grammar Galaxy Nebula Has Arrived!

Grammar Galaxy is a series of adventures in language arts. It tells the exploits of three children from Planet English. Each week the children go on a mission to save Grammar Galaxy from the perils of improper grammar. At the end of the week, they are given a Mission Update on how they succeeded in helping the galaxy.

Grammar Galaxy Nebula is the first in the series and is designed for young readers who are just beginning grammar studies.

What I love about Grammar Galaxy:

1. It is a living book. Yes, the Charlotte Mason homeschooler in me loves living books. I just can’t do a textbook.
2. It makes a rather boring subject…FUN! Yes, fun! I hate teaching grammar. My children hate learning grammar. This series sneaks in the grammar in a fun context. What teacher doesn’t want to teach a subject the kids enjoy?
3. It’s Open-and-Go. There’s not a lot of materials and planning. You read the chapter and then the student works through the missions. Simple. (sigh)
4. There are 36 chapters which easily convert into 36 weeks of instruction or longer, or shorter if you prefer.
5. It goes perfectly with our literature studies.

What my daughter loves about Grammar Galaxy:

1. It comes with a groovy erasable hi-liter. That’s right — I said erasable hi-liter! She spent several minutes the first day showing off her new, really cool, hi-liter to every member of the family.
2. She gets to use her really cool hi-liter in her new Grammar Galaxy Nebula Mission Manual. Sometimes little people have a hard time writing or simply get tired of writing. In the manual, many of the steps in the mission can be answered using the hi-liter.
3. It also comes with a Grammar Guardian bookmark. On this bookmark, the student can record stars they’ve earned from completing units.

Update: Do we still like Grammar Galaxy?

Yes, we do. It is the one subject the youngest consistently likes to do. She never complains and has frequently asked to do it on days when we were going to skip grammar! Now, that’s a change!

We are in our third year of Grammar Galaxy and we have modified how we work through the program. In the beginning, I read the mission and we worked on the mission steps together. Now that she is older and more confident, she likes to read the mission and work independently on the manual. There are still elements where she needs me to complete a task, but for the most part, she is working independently and loves it.

So, yes, I still wholeheartedly recommend Grammar Galaxy.
