A House is a House for Me Nature Book Club Discussion

This month our book club was on the book, A House is a House is for Me. We met with our Nature Book Club and had so much fun reading this adorable book. By the end, the children were quoting "A House is a House for Me" along with me. Because the book talks about houses for animals, insects, and even random household items it easily led to discussions about habitats, ecosystems, and biomes.

A House is A House for Me Nature Book Club- Reading

We discussed how habitats are our homes, while ecosystems were like our neighborhoods or cities. And then we talked about the different biomes that existed in the world and which one we lived in (it's a deciduous forest!).

I brought a Mockingbird's nest and a crab shell from home so the kids could see some animal homes up close. Then we talked about animal homes in our environment and what animals lived near us.

They were excited to get out their nature journals later that day and go for a hunt for animal and insect homes in their yards.

While I read the story, the children snacked on brownies in the shape of a tree and chocolate pretzel birds' nests. One of the moms in our group was so kind to make our snacks and they were a huge hit! (Because, really, isn't everything better with chocolate?!)

A House is A House for Me Nature Book Club-Biome Painting

For our nature book club activity, we made biomes. Each child brought a shoe box. For those who forgot their shoebox, I provided some printouts about biomes that they could paint or color.

I provided each of the following for the kids:

  • Paint brush
  • Paint (green, blue, white and brown)
  • Toy marine animals, farm animals and wild animals.

The kids chose the type of biome and picked out their animals. They had so much fun painting their animal habitats.

Hi, I’m Dachelle. I’m a homeschooling mom of 3 in the South. I love chocolate and have been known to hide it from my children. I can often be found reading a good book (or even sometimes just an okay book) and enjoying a jar of Nutella — don’t judge. I blog, here, at HideTheChocolate.com when I’m not creating book clubs and making lists…lots and lots of lists (it’s an addiction). Learn more…
